S5 EP 4: Sonya Shelton – The Power of Purpose

A woman of value is a woman. Every person has value. You might not have recognized or accepted it yet, but there isn’t a woman on the face of the earth who doesn’t have value.

We use a process called the ‘why connection’ – why do you do what you do? What do you bring to the world.

I do what I do to partner with others to have a bigger impact. It helps me make decisions about the type of client I want to work with. I work with teams, and if nothing changes, why would I work with them?

I used to be the head of internal communications at Disney. I had a boss who could be defined as an emotional terrorist. He manipulated and it helped me learn about myself and connect to my own value.

I started my company because I recognized the importance of culture and vision in a company. We help companies understand their purpose and how to connect it to everything they do.

THE FUTURE: The Power of Purpose

I believe we are shifting in business today in these ways: uncertainty and the speed of change. These can lead to burnout. But I’m inspired by the younger generations who are purpose driven in how they work and buy. My vision is to help companies see the power of purpose. They can get passionate about that purpose. It changes how people work.

I used to think I wasn’t successful enough.

What was the #1 thing holding you back from becoming a woman of value? Fear of judgment.

What’s the best advice you can give to a woman who wants to
become more empowered? Discover your superpower and be you. Find what drives you. No one else can do it like you.

What advice would you give to your younger self? Trust yourself more often.

What’s something people get wrong about you? I’m calm, but I also have a great adventurous spirit and people are shocked by that.

How would you like to be remembered? As having had an impact for people to step into their empowerment and see what’s possible for them.
