WHAT DOES WOMAN OF VALUE MEAN TO YOU?

Women, especially women of color, judge ourselves with an external yardstick. We judge by our salary, how fast we get a promotion. At home, we judge ourselves by how clean our house is. Woman of value is the internal yardstick by which you measure your worth.

LEARNING TO ADVOCATE FOR YOURSELF

It started when I was young. My parents raised me to be seen as equal to what my brother could do. They believed in me, and I believed in myself. I found my mentors and allies. I rectified my mistakes and got results.
One of the first mistakes I made was not asking for a promotion fast enough. I thought my hard work would be enough. Bragging was frowned upon. Someone got promoted before me, and I learned to ask sooner and speak up for myself and tell the company what’s in it for them to promote me.

Another challenge was to speak up in meetings and not let impostor syndrome come in the way of career progress.

THE PRESENT

I’ve had a non-linear career. My background is in engineering and I have an MBA, and now I’m a career coach. My mission is to close the gender gap in the C-Suite. At Pink Careers, I share what I’ve learned so they don’t make the mistakes I made. I work with leadership in the Canadian Government and with individual women and leaders.

THE FUTURE

I want to live in a world where women stop sabotaging ourselves, whether at work or at home. I want to empower women to have equal partnership at home.

THE LIGHTNING ROUND

I used to think I wasn’t smart enough.
What was the #1 thing holding you back from becoming a woman
of value? Not asking for what I want!
What’s the best advice you can give to a woman who wants to
become more empowered? It’s your life. Be in the driver’s seat or someone else will be.

What advice would you give to your younger self? Be fearless. Raise your hand for the scary stuff.
What’s something people get wrong about you? People think I’m just strong. I’m like a coconut. Hard on the outside, soft on the inside.
How would you like to be remembered? I’d like to be remembered as someone who left the world a little better than I found it.
