WHAT DOES WOMAN OF VALUE MEAN TO YOU?
Now that I’m older, I see at as a woman who is free to make choices that are good for her without worrying about what other people think.
YOUR ‘AHA’ WOMAN OF VALUE MOMENT
In my book I talk about representing the serial killer, John Wayne Gacy, when he was on death row. I’m against the death penalty, but I naively thought there wouldn’t be negative repercussions from my decision to represent him. I was criticized and received death threats. It got international attention, and I had to be very strong and be better and look better than everyone! It was one of the most stressful times in my life. And I’m a better person now due to that experience.
As a woman, I’ve gotten the brunt of the backlash during the Gacy case. At the time, I was a woman doing a “man’s job” and I got a lot of hate email sexualizing me.
THE PRESENT
I like to diversify. Being a lawyer is stressful. If I put other things in my life, I will be better. I have a small law firm. I have a two hour radio show and a new book. It makes me happy to do all of it. It adds balance.
I’m very active. I ride a bike, and I used to run marathons. I read voraciously.
THE FUTURE
I’d like to have my own television show. I hope this book opens opportunities for me to do the show. I’d like to get away from practicing law.
THE LIGHTNING ROUND
- I used to think I wasn’t SMART enough.
- What was the #1 thing holding you back from becoming a woman
of value? How I was raised and told I couldn’t do things. - What’s the best advice you can give to a woman who wants to
become more empowered? Surround yourself with positive people who have your back.
- What advice would you give to your younger self? Have more confidence. You were smart enough and could do all those things.
- What’s something people get wrong about you? They think I’m hard, because I have to be firm and assertive in my professional life. I have a softer side.
- How would you like to be remembered? As a good friend, good author, good advocate and lawyer and a good person.
